Buying a home in Dorset Park

Dorset Park was once the site of a village called Ellesmere, known as a sporting town. The Ellesmere football team was named the Maple Leaf — you’ve probably heard that name somewhere before — and they would go on to win the Ontario championship in 1890; you can imagine what a raucous parade that was with all the horse-drawn buggies, and onlookers who appeared as though they had stepped out of a Dickens novel.

Now this neighbourhood is called Dorset Park, and is no longer the sports hub it once was. Dorset Park is split down the middle by Kennedy Road which serves as the major thoroughfare for the neighbourhood; to the west of Kennedy you’ll find residential areas, and to the east, large commercial spaces. There’s some variety here in terms of housing — bungalows, detached 2-storeys, townhomes, and Dorset Park condos.

The commercial section of Dorset Park is packed with retail stores for fashion, cosmetics, elections, furniture, and more — if it’s sold in a store, you can buy it here. There are many businesses in the area in the service industry — including an auction house — and on Kennedy and Ellesmere you’ll find restaurants, grocery stores, and cafes.

Dorset Park condos are great for families and first-time home buyers; prices are still in the realm of the reasonable, so buyers get more bang for their buck than they would with downtown Toronto condos. There are nearby schools, community centres, and libraries spread throughout the area. Green spaces are limited, but Thomson Memorial Park is just next door for walking trails and acres of green grass.

    Condo Life in Dorset Park

The condo scene in Dorset Park is bustling — whether you’re looking for a sizeable townhome or a well-appointed condo, you’ve got options here. Prices are very affordable, and layouts are generous; you can find an 800 square foot 1 bedroom condo in 100 Prudential Drive Condos, selling for half the price of a 500 square foot 1 bedroom unit in downtown Toronto.

Dorset Park condos come with competitive amenities, and you can expect to find gyms, party rooms, parking garages, and all the usual extras here. Townhomes offer less in the way of amenities, but you get larger floor plans and enhanced privacy: West Birkdale Condos offers a living experience that's similar to a semi-detached house.

Dorset Park condos are evenly dispersed in the neighbourhood, but are generally close to Kennedy Road and Lawrence Avenue.

    Transportation

Dorset Park has a Walk Score of 68 — which is not truly representative of the area, because as condo owner, you enjoy a prime location.

The neighbourhood has great public transit, with bus routes on Kennedy, Ellesmere, Midland, Birchmount, and Lawrence Avenue. For travel downtown, Lawrence East Station resides within the neighbourhood for subway service.

Drivers have convenient access to 2 major highways — Ontario 401 to the north, and the Don Valley Parkway to the west.
