About 21 River Street — Corktown Lofts
Simple on the outside, yet opulent within, the Corktown Lofts at 21 River Street is a small hard loft building converted back in 1998. The unadorned exterior dates back to the structure’s original industrial use, while distinguished developer River Studio Inc has since updated the building with residential desires in mind. By blending rich history with innovative architectural design, the conversion of 21 River Street now positions the Corktown Lofts as a one-of-a-kind place to call home.
The building was most certainly used for industrial purposes, although the specific history of this is shrouded in mystery. Some claim 21 River Street was once a tannery built in the mid 19th century. Others declare it was a mill factory that functioned alongside the distilleries and breweries in the area. Regardless, the exterior minimalism and interior excellence now makes the Corktown Lofts one of the best kept secrets in Toronto’s loft market. Plus, with only 8 units, Toronto condos for sale in the building have that added sense of exclusivity.
The Suites
The Corktown Lofts are amusing as ever for those who get a kick out of Toronto lofts with character. Each of the eight suites features authentic cedar post and beams, exposed brick walls, hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings, and generously sized windows. Between the units, individual finishes vary greatly, providing each loft with a unique edge: some are meticulously designed and furnished, while others offer a natural, raw edginess.
The hard lofts range in size from approximately 1,150 to 1,680 square feet, meaning plenty of room for those looking to work from home. These spacious lofts are also perfect for those with small families, or those hoping to start one. Shared living spaces are separated from the bedrooms, providing everyone with just the right amount of privacy.
Intimacy seems to be a running theme at the Corktown Lofts. Each of the eight units feature a New York-style private entrance, a rare privilege in Toronto condo and loft living. Some even boast private terraces, fantastic for getting fresh air in the warmer months without needing to leave the house.
While the intimately sized building does not provide any shared amenities, a conciliation is offered in the form of low maintenance fees.
The Neighbourhood
Despite what the name says, these lofts are located within the borders of Regent Park, though nobody will know the difference if you decide to claim Corktown - Toronto as your neighbourhood. Corktown is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Toronto. Tales state that early 19th century immigrants from County Cork in Ireland provided the area with its name. An opposing theory is that industrial times saw a number of distilleries, breweries, and cork manufacturers in the area.
One thing is for certain though, and that is the current state of Corktown: the neighbourhood is teeming with trendsetting young families, creative urban professionals, and everyone in between.
Corktown has recently seen signs of economic rejuvenation, with more and more of these new young neighbours moving into the area. Previously neglected sections of the neighbourhood are being revitalized, and interesting local businesses are following as well.
Perhaps intuitive types are intrigued by remnants of history that add a layer of complexity to the area.
