Buying a home in Old East York

Welcome to Old East York, a massive neighbourhood filled with countless residential streets, numerous parks, and various commercial sections scattered here and there. Once home to brick yards, market gardens, and the people employed in these fields, the population of Old East York grew considerably in the years immediately following World War II. Many new homes were built during this period, doubling the residential offerings that had already existed.

Just before being amalgamated into the City of Toronto in 1998, Old East York was the only borough in the entire country. Thanks to its large size, some pockets of the neighbourhood feel entirely unique, while others feel utterly Torontonian. Regardless, prospective buyers interested in Old East York condos for sale will be pleased to find a good balance of longstanding institutions, hipster haunts (think microbreweries and a knife throwing facility), and big-box stores.

The borders of Old East York are quite expansive, with the northernmost boundary along Kilgour Road (just north of Eglinton), and the southernmost portion reaching down to the Danforth. From east to west, Old East York covers the area between Bayview and Victoria Park. Within this midtown neighbourhood is a varied landscape, filled with many creeks and the ravines that surround them. Residents can spend weekends exploring trails along the Don River and Massey Creek, or picnicking in the Lower Don Parklands and Coxwell Ravine Park.

With the neighbourhood reaching as far south as the Danforth, residents will likely spend plenty of time in Greektown, which reaches almost to Victoria Park. A day spent on the Danforth might involve chowing down on some freshly baked spanikopita from Athens Pastries, stocking up on Greek wines at the LCBO, or attending a concert at the Danforth Music Hall.

When it comes time to run errands, the big-box stores in Old East York make life just a little easier for those who purchase Toronto condos for sale here. SmartCentres Leaside is home to a Home Depot, Sport Chek, Urban Barn, and Best Buy, while a PetSmart, Staples, HomeSense, and Canadian Tire are all situated along Eglinton East. Alternatively, shoppers can find a more upscale atmosphere along Bayview, just south of Eglinton. After browsing in boutiques, residents can sit down for a bite at the Bagel House, Duff’ or Famous Wings, grab a snack at Hollywood Gelato, or pick up some natural meat from Cumbraes or Rowe Farms.

As far as new buildings go, nothing quite beats the Minto Skyy. With suites spanning up to 2,770 square feet, this 2010-built condo is ideal for budding families. Plus, the Minto Skyy offers residents the chance to enjoy contemporary amenities such as a party room, cinema, sauna, concierge, and rooftop terrace.
