Buying a home in Markland Wood

Markland Wood was originally owned by the Silverthorn family, but as the city continued to expand towards their land, the Silverthorn’s decided to sell. Sometimes called Mark’s Land after the purchaser Mark Cavotti — construction began in the 1960s, forming the modern day neighbourhood of Markland Wood.

Today, Markland Wood is a family neighbourhood, offering a much slower pace than found in the city, but with easy access to major highways for those who commute. On residential streets you’ll find large 2-storey houses on sizeable lots, there’s an abundance of green spaces in the area, and Etobicoke Creek runs along the western boundary, providing residents with creekside walking trails.

Like much of the GTA, the cost of a single-family home in this neighbourhood is quite high — but Markland Wood condos are much more affordable, and are generally on par with the average price of Toronto condos for sale; however, all things are not equal, because Markland Wood condos have much larger floor plans than units in downtown Toronto.

There are several nearby schools in the public and catholic boards, ranging from primary to senior high. Entertainment options are based around outdoor recreation; there are baseball fields, soccer pitches, playgrounds, and Markland Wood Golf Club is on the westside of the neighbourhood.

Businesses are sparsely located throughout the area — shopping and dining options are limited to a few places on Burnhamthorpe and Bloor. For additional options, Cloverdale Mall is just east of the Markland Wood on Dundas — likewise, heading west on Dundas opens up a wealth of shopping options.

Condo buyers have some choice in Markland Wood — there are 8 buildings in the neighbourhood, most of which were built in the 70s and 80s, but there are a few newer developments as well. There’s a building to suit all tastes here — with high-rise, mid-rise, and townhomes available.

The best bang for your buck can be found in older Markland Wood condos such as Millgate Manor Condos, Millgate Manor II Condos, and Millgate Manor III Condos — suite sizes are quite generous, and it's entirely possible to find a 1200-1300 square foot condo, selling for the price of a 500 square foot condo downtown. Amenities are consistent with other buildings; you’ll get the usual extras in condos like gyms, party rooms, and in some cases a pool, while townhomes offer a private setting but far less amenities.

Most Markland Wood condos are located on Bloor, Mill, or Burnhamthorpe, which places residents near bus routes and a small selection of restaurants.

    Transportation

Markland Wood has a 69 Walk Score, but with limited shopping options in the area, residents might need a vehicle or public transit to run all of their errands. Public transit is a bit of a letdown; there are only a few buses in the area and portions of the neighbourhood are without service.

This is absolutely a driver’s neighbourhood — the 427 sits on the eastern border of Markland Wood, making it easy to connect to the 401 and Gardiner Expressway.
