Buying a home in Mount Pleasant West

Neighbourhood names often create a sense of identity, or inspire imagery, sometimes for better or worse — Downsview, for example, might make one think of melancholy people traipsing down the sidewalk on a rainy day. Summerhill, on the other hand, evokes images of a hill top neighbourhood on a warm summer’s day… and that image couldn’t be more fitting.

Summerhill is a very desirable neighbourhood for families — on narrow residential streets shrouded by trees you’ll encounter large 2-storey semi-detached and detached houses, most of which garner high price tags; it’s proximity to Yorkville has likely contributed to higher prices. Summerhill condos are more affordable in some cases, though there are plenty of luxurious buildings; One Balmoral and Summerhill Gardens are certainly geared towards established buyers.

Yonge St and Avenue are by far the most travelled roads in the neighbourhood, and it’s there where most business are located — and also most Summerhill condos. Residents have an assortment of cozy cafes like Black Camel, unique eateries such as The Rosedale Diner, and local watering holes like Boxcar Social. As well, there are specialized boutiques and a number of service based businesses.

Condo Life in Mount Pleasant West

Summerhill condos likely have more to offer to families than young professionals — the neighbourhood has excellent schools, and a sizeable green space in David A. Balfour Park. Condos in the neighbourhood often have large floor plans: 423 Avenue Road Condos doesn’t have a single unit below 1300 square feet.

First time home buyers might find Toronto condos for sale in this neighbourhood to be too pricey, but there are a few properties with reasonably priced suites — Rosedale Terrace is a boutique residence that was built in 2001, and while landing a unit here might be a task due to there only being 19 in the building, the price per square foot is below the neighbourhood average. The Oaklands is another option for first time buyers, as it does have affordable 1 bedroom units.

Summerhill condos vary in terms of amenities, though many buildings tend to offer only modest extras.

Summerhill is certainly pedestrian friendly, especially for those living in Summerhill condos on Yonge and Avenue Rd.

Streetcars on St. Clair Ave make it easy to travel east to west, and buses on Yonge and Avenue carry passengers north or south. For longer trips, residents can walk to Summerhill Station for subway lines. Car owners can go south on Yonge and then east on Bloor for the Don Valley Parkway.
