Buying a home in Jane and Finch

Residing in the North York area, Jane and Finch is a diverse neighbourhood, mostly comprised of semi-detached houses and single family homes. The neighbourhood is home to large immigrant population, most of whom are Spanish, Vietnamese, and Italian. As such, the neighbourhood caters to a broad demographic of people — both in terms of heritage and age.

Jane and Finch is well known for all the wrong reasons — most of that reputation stems from bad press. But as prices in the GTA continue to rise, Jane and Finch condos represent an opportunity for first-time home buyers and families on a tight budget who are having trouble finding Toronto condos for sale in other neighbourhoods.

Housing prices in the area tend to be cheaper than those in other neighbourhoods as well, making this an ideal location for those who are seeking a single family home. There are several schools in the area at all academic levels, and residents enjoy great access to green spaces — the largest of which is Derrydowns Park, extending along the eastern border of the community.

Jane, Sheppard, and Finch serve as major thoroughfares for the area — and are also where most businesses are located. On Jane you’ll find a shopping centre to the north, and a range of boutiques and family-friendly restaurants spread throughout the street. Yorkgate Mall sits just north of the neighbourhood as well, providing additional shopping and dining options.

There are also some service based businesses on Eddystone Avenue in the middle of the neighbourhood — cleaners, financial services, and auto repair shops.

Condo Life in Jane and Finch

The condo scene in Jane and Finch is somewhat limited, in the same way that people are limited in a ghost town; there are only a few buildings in the area to choose from, and they are either spacious townhouses or mid-rise condos. The big draw for Jane and Finch condos are the prices — units in this neighbourhood go for bargain prices; unfortunately, many of them are dated and likely need some renovations.

The most modern development in the area is 1723 Finch Avenue Townhomes — where prospective buyers can find 1800 square foot homes which feel just a like a house, but for a fraction of the cost. The drawback for Jane and Finch condos are that amenities are light, which could be seen as a plus for condo owners on a tight budget, due to lower maintenance fees.

    Transportation

If you’re looking for a pedestrian friendly neighbourhood, you might be disappointed — Jane and Finch has a Walk Score of 61; residents of this community could have trouble running errands on foot depending on where they’re located. The neighbourhood has decent public transit, and there are bus routes on Jane, Sheppard, Finch, and Oakdale.
