Buying a home in Eglinton East

Proving that people in the past were bad at naming things — Eglinton East was originally known as Knob Hill. Like most of Scarborough, Eglinton East was once farmland, but is now a residential neighbourhood. Homes in the area vary from detached bungalows and world war II homes, with some Eglinton East condos found on major roads.

Eglinton East condos represent a great opportunity for first time home buyers, as the price per square foot for these units can be a third of the price of downtown Toronto. Most buildings in the area were built in the 80s and 90s, because of this, units are likely in need of an upgrade or two — music to the ears of investors. These condos don’t have all the flash of more modern buildings, so if you’re looking for an extensive offering of extras, then it’s best to look elsewhere.

Eglinton East is a residential neighbourhood through and through — within the community you’ll find several schools, and expansive green spaces like those of Knob Hill Park and Pringdale Ravine. Families may find recreation centres to be lacking, but there are facilities in neighbouring areas.

Most businesses are clustered around Eglinton Avenue, which functions as main street for the neighbourhood; here you’ll find family friendly restaurants like Pizzaville, Eggsmart, Swiss Chalet and McDonald’s. There’s a variety of shops along Eglinton Avenue from automotive repair, to big box stores and hair salons — and many specialized service based businesses as well.

    Condo Life in Eglinton East

The majority of Eglinton East condos are found in brick high-rises, reminiscent of older condo designs; there are also a select few townhome developments too. The big appeal here is price, but units also come with very generous floor plans — especially when you consider that there are multiple buildings in the neighbourhood which have 1 bedroom + dens that are over 900 square feet: 1 bedroom units at 15 Torrance Road Condos start at 867 square feet.

Eglinton Avenue and Danforth Road have been the chosen location for developments, placing residents next to the best of what the community can offer. Younger buyers might find entertainment options to be lacking — nobody in King West will ever be jealous of your location — but for those who don’t mind a slower pace, there’s a lot to love about Eglinton East condos.

    Transportation

With a Walk Score of 62, this neighbourhood won’t be setting the world on fire with pedestrian traffic, but condo owners on the southern edge of the community have some convenient options within walking distance. Public transit is a better way to get around — there are east and westbound buses on Eglinton, north and southbound buses on Danforth, and Eglinton GO sits on the south-east corner of the neighbourhood for longer trips.

Drivers will need to be patient; the Ontario 401 is about 20 minutes to the north, but drivers may choose to try their luck on Kingston Road, which is only a few minutes south. No matter which you choose — take deep breaths.
