King West is more than just a neighbourhood: it’s a destination. People from all over the city flock to King West on date night, Saturday afternoons, or whenever else they can, in order to soak up the trendy atmosphere of this neighbourhood. Just about everything that happens in King West is hip, happening, and fashionable, and most of the businesses in the area also happen to be upscale. While everyone is welcome to do as they please, the majority of King West residents tend not to leave the house without their hair perfectly coiffed.
The neighbourhood isn’t only confined to King Street itself, though: King West includes the surrounding area, from University to Dovercourt and Adelaide to Front. Contained within this neighbourhood is an array of entertainment venues that suit all sorts of individuals. For example, posh bars and clubs are concentrated on King and Adelaide just west of University, catering to crowds with the energy to stay out all night.
Toronto condos for sale in King West are also ideal for cinephiles. Not only does the TIFF Bell Lightbox screen international and independent films year round, but it also contains the Film Reference Library and two gallery spaces. The TIFF Bell Lightbox becomes even busier during the annual Toronto International Film Festival each September, when movies are also screened at additional venues throughout the city.
Other specialized theatres can also be found throughout the King West Neighbourhood. Music fans can listen to a performance by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the Roy Thompson Hall, comedy buffs can catch a stand-up act at Second City, and play fanatics can find some of the most impressive productions in town at the Princess of Wales and Royal Alexandra Theatres. Those interested in King West condos for sale will also be glad to hear about Stanley Park. While it’s no Trinity Bellwoods Park (which is still just a short walk away), Stanley Park boasts an off-leash dog area, and its outdoor swimming pool is truly a well-kept secret.
King West is home to nearly 100 condos, with more going up all the time. As a result, it’s almost always possible to find pre-construction condos for sale in King West. Although other developers are certainly welcome here, one man has worked incredibly hard to earn himself the title of King of King West: Peter Freed. Freed (with the help of his company Freed Developments) has graced the neighbourhood with a profusion of high-end condos including 500 Wellington West, Seventy5 Portland, Six50 King, and the Fashion House Condo. Freed himself once lived in the penthouse at 500 Wellington Street West, before selling his home for a staggering $7.5 million.
Freed has also developed residences affiliated with the Thompson Hotel: The Thompson Residences at 55 Stewart and 552 Wellington West and the Thompson Residences at 621-629 King West and 38 Stewart. Living in any of these buildings not only means living in a Freed-built home, but also having access to all the amenities a hotel has to offer. Also new on the hotel scene — although this one was created by Lifetime Developments rather than Freed — is the Bisha Hotel & Residences at 88 Blue Jays Way. Suites in the building reach to over 2,500 square feet, and the list of amenities offered to residents is truly enviable.
Then there are the King West condos for sale that are ideal for movie fans. The Cinema Tower at 21 Widmer features an amenities space called the ‘Club Cinematheque,’ as well as a basketball court, guest suites, and a rooftop terrace. The Festival Tower, on the other hand, is situated directly above the TIFF Bell Lightbox, and residents living in the building are entitled to free movie passes plus special pricing and perks during the film festival.
King West residents who don’t want to put up with traffic or parking will likely rely on the King streetcar to get around. Those living toward the west end of the neighbourhood can use this service to reach St. Andrew Station, while walking to the subway is always an option for those who have time as well. Another great option for public transit is the 121 Fort York-Esplanade Bus, which comes in handy for anyone who lives closer to Front Street. This bus route carries passengers as far west as Ontario Place, and as far east as Corktown and the Port Lands.
There’s yet another option for those who don’t drive. Cyclists interested in King West condos for sale will also be glad to hear about the bike lanes situated along Adelaide and Richmond. Those heading south can also use Adelaide to reach Simcoe Street, from which they can connect onto the Martin Goodman Trail.
Last but not least, drivers living in the King West neighbourhood can zip toward other neighbourhoods (or out of the city altogether) by using the Gardiner Expressway as a starting point. Located just a few minutes south, the Gardiner is a fast-paced route for traveling east or west along the southern edge of the city, and offers connections to the 427 to the west and the Don Valley Parkway to the East.
