Buying a home in The Beaches

You guessed it: the focal point of The Beaches neighbourhood is, in fact, its beaches. The neighbourhood reaches from Kingston Road down to Lake Ontario, and covers the area between Coxwell Avenue to Victoria Park. The southern border of the neighbourhood is comprised entirely of beaches, which are connected by a single boardwalk.

We should pause here to note that this neighbourhood is also sometimes called the Beach. In fact, there’s an ongoing debate as to which is the proper name: signs reading ‘The Beaches’ went up in 1985, only to be promptly taken down by angry members of the community. Although ‘the Beaches’ is the official name used by the city of Toronto’s government, both that and ‘the Beach’ are acceptable.

Call it what you want, there’s no doubt that there are multiple beaches in the neighbourhood. The uninterrupted stretch of sand, which covers almost 4 kilometres, changes names multiple times. Woodbine Beach, for example, is the westernmost stretch of beach in the neighbourhood. Woodbine is also the largest, boasting plenty of volleyball courts, Ashbridges Bay Park and Water Park, the Beach Community Edible Garden, and the Ashbridges Bay Yacht Club.

Unsurprisingly, Toronto condos for sale in this neighbourhood are well suited to outdoorsy types. Families hoping to purchase a condo for sale in the Beaches are also in luck, as the neighbourhood contains many schools and parks, and is extremely safe.

While some residents may beg to differ, there’s more to the Beaches than just its beaches. The Beaches International Jazz Festival is a free, month-long festival that’s been operating in the neighbourhood since 1989. The RC Harris Water Treatment Plant is yet another site to explore in the area. Torontonians travel to the Beaches just to take a look at this arresting Art Deco edifice, while residents living in the beaches can head over to the site any day for a picnic on the grassy hills that overlook Lake Ontario.

    Condo Life in The Beaches

The single-family homes in the Beaches have a distinctly beachy vibe: many of the Victorian and Edwardian homes have even been the recipients of pastel-coloured paint jobs. Density in the Beaches has been on the rise in recent years, with plenty of new condo being constructed in the neighbourhood since the turn of the 21st century.

Condos for sale in the Beaches tend to be concentrated along Queen East, convenient for the access they offer to the Queen streetcar, as well as shops and restaurants. While density is a concern for some developers, there are still plenty of boutique buildings in the Beaches, such as Kew Beach, which consists of just 12 units.

The closest a buyer hoping to purchase a condo for sale in the Beaches can get to Lake Ontario is Glen Manor, yet another intimately sized building. With only 11 units in all, this contemporary building blends in seamlessly with the red brick homes that occupy Glen Manor Road. The Boardwalk and The Boardwalk II are also situated just north of Woodbine Beach, on Boardwalk Drive. With nearly 200 units between the two buildings, and the largest spanning almost 2,300 square feet, these are great options for families.

    Transportation

The Queen Streetcar is the most convenient route for reaching the downtown car, should one opt not to drive. Passengers can use this streetcar to transfer onto the subway at Queen or Osgoode Station, or they can continue on into the West End.

Drivers, on the other hand, benefit from Kingston Road and Lake Shore Boulevard being within close reach. The former can be used to reach the 401, while the latter is ideal for anyone heading toward the city centre.
