Buying a home in North York

It’s difficult to sum up North York, considering the diverse array of neighbourhoods that lie within it. The enormous area, which sits north of Eglinton Avenue and stretches as far north as Steeles, contains over 30 distinctive pockets that each have their own lists of selling points. That said, North York condos for sale all promise a number of things to prospective buyers, such as countless ravines, lower density, and excellent highway access.

North York was actually once a city of its own: initially a township, then a borough, it finally achieved the designation of city in 1979. Over the next nine years North York would experience rapid growth, with the development of transportation infrastructure and residential offerings attracting more and more residents to the area. Finally, the 1998 amalgamation of the municipalities surrounding Toronto resulted in North York becoming one of six areas in the megacity of Toronto.

Three neighbourhoods quickly come to mind when thinking about North York: Bayview Village, Yorkdale, and Don Mills. It also just so happens that these neighbourhoods all contain namesake shopping centres that attract visitors from near and far. The Bayview Village Shopping Centre is known for its high-end boutiques; the Shops at Don Mills is untraditional (for Toronto at least), in that it’s an outdoor mall, and Yorkdale may only be the country’s fourth largest mall, but it’s known to have welcomed the first locations of international stores such as Apple, Microsoft, Tesla Motors, and most recently, the Cheesecake Factory.

Big-box stores are also situated throughout North York, which prove especially useful for residents looking to redecorate or partake in some DIY activities. Bayview Village is home to a massive IKEA, plus there’s a Costo and Home Depot just north of Yorkdale, in Downsview. Shoppers in search of independent retailers and one-off restaurants, on the other hand, can visit commercial pockets like the stretch of Yonge between Sheppard and Finch, and Avenue Road between Lawrence and the 401. The former is also known as Koreatown North, although plenty of Japanese and Chinese restaurants can be found here as well.

Some buyers flock to North York for the wider roadways and the big-box stores, while others are interested in the more affordable price tags that come attached to North York condos for sale. Ironically, one North York neighbourhood also happens to be home to the highest property values in Canada. In Bridle Path — basically the Yorkville of North York — lots cover anywhere from two to four acres, and celebrity residents are aplenty. Drake recently bought a house here, with other notable neighbours over the years including the likes of Rachel McAdams, Steven Spielberg, and Prince.

Last but not least, green space is yet another reason to consider North York condos for sale. Your average park can certainly be found in the area, however there are also facilities that go well beyond what’s expected of an urban green space. Serious golfers can become members at the Oakdale Golf & Country Club, while those who don’t plan to play as often can visit the city-run Don Valley Golf Course from time to time. In Lansing and Armour Heights, on the other hand, Earl Bales Park actually becomes even busier in the winter, as it’s home to the Earl Bales Ski and Snowboard Centre. The only urban ski hill in the city, Earl Bales is set up with two chairlifts, and its small size makes this hill great for beginners.

    Condo Life in North York

North York has many new immigrants living in the area, perhaps attracted to North York for its more affordable housing — especially compared to the prices in the downtown Toronto. In fact, over half of the area’s population is made up of individuals born outside of Canada.

Just as it’s difficult to explain the character of such a large area, it’s hard to generalize when it comes to North York condos for sale. The area is home to nearly 500 condos that are spread throughout North York’s diverse neighbourhoods, with many buyers setting their sights on idyllic spots like Bayview Village and Don Mills. Those in search of a condo in Bayview Village will want to check out the intimately-sized NY Place Condos at 17 Kenaston Gardens. Developed by the beloved Daniels Corporation in 2012, the building also happens to be located steps from the Bayview Station. As for Don Mills, the buyers can’t go wrong with the 1978-built High Point Condos, which offers residents access to a tennis court, gym, and party room.

Families seeking North York condos for sale can check out Gibson Square North Tower, ARC Condos, and Avonshire Condos, all of which contain suites that cover more than 2,000 square feet. Another great option is the Royal Arms Condos at 5418 Yonge. Not only is the building situated a few short blocks from Finch Station on the Yonge line, but units also span up to approximately 3,400 square feet.

    Transportation

With the 401, the Don Valley Parkway, the 400, the Allen Expressway, and the 404 running through the area, North York is clearly a great place to live for residents who drive. A trip from Bayview Village all the way over to Pearson International Airport, for example, takes just 20 minutes via the 401. And when traffic cooperates, Don Mills residents can reach the Eaton Centre in less than 20 minutes by heading south down the Don Valley Parkway.

Luckily, the TTC also services North York quite well. Residents living close to Yonge Street can hop onto subway trains in order to head south toward the city centre in no time. Those living in Bayview Village and Willowdale, on the other hand, have access to the Sheppard subway line, which connects to the Yonge line at Sheppard-Yonge Station.

Over to the west, residents living in Downsview, Yorkdale and Glen Park, and surrounding neighbourhoods can reach the University-Spadina subway line in no time. Glencairn, Lawrence West, Yorkdale, Wilson, Sheppard West, Downsview Park, Finch West, and York University Stations all help to connect North York residents with the rest of Toronto.
